WATER: Life Stories and Longings

Tonight I met a skeleton.

He reached and took me by the hand.

As I shivered from the cold

he told his story, straw to gold,

and back again, because at last-

we leave belongings in the past.

He said, “I’m looking for a drink

to make me cry and help me sing.”

A song came from the deep underneath the city streets.

Like water: you think you can do without, but you need water.

He couldn't dance

because his bones

all clicked and creaked,

the ivory stones.

(The water singing under his feet,

the words he hummed,

the whispering trees.)

A song came from the deep underneath the country streets.

Like water: you think you can do without, but you need water.

When I don’t find what I seek,

and the night pushes me to sleep.

The river coursing underneath,

sleep to wake, wake to dream.
